Marvala Paan Podi

Marvala pana podi is one of the famous dish among konkan people.
In rainy season,tree colocasia is found grown on a particular tree called goli mara(in kannada).
This dish is deep fried.But if you don't like deep fry you can also shallow fry. Both tastes great.
Here I have shown both the versions,deep fry and tawa fry.
Ingredients
Marvala Panna - 4 bunch
Long red dry chilly - 9 (byadgi chilly)
Raw rice - 3/4th cup (dosa rice)
Urad dal - 3/4th cup
Tamarind - 1 big lemon sized
Salt - 1 tbsp
Ghee/Oil - 4 to 6 tbsp (for tawa fry)
Oil - for deep fry
Method

Keep leaves ready
  1. Remove stem of the leaves.
  2. Wash the leaves and wipe with a clean cloth.
  3. Let it dry compeletly.
For Masala Preparation
  1. Roughly chop 9 dry red chilly and soak in water for 30 - 60 min.
  2. Wash 3/4th cup raw rice and place them in clean cloth,let it dry for 30 min. Then grind to coarse powder,just like bombay rava(semolina) and place it in a bowl. Note: Here you can also use rice rawa.
  3. Heat a kadai, add 3/4th cup of urad dal and fry on low flame till it turns brown in color. Once it cools down grind to fine powder and mix with rice powder.
  4. In a mixy jar, add soaked chilly,tamarind and salt grind to fine paste.
  5. Now mix chilly paste with rice urad powder.
  6. Add little by little water and mix well. The consistency should be semi dry.
  7. As you mix the dough becomes dry,again add water as required.
Applying Masala to Leaves
     On clean surface,place big leaf and follow instructions as given in below pictures.(for detail view please refer above video

Place another big leaf and apply masala
Continue stacking leaves in decreasing order
Make a stack of 10 leaves
Fold both the sides and apply masala
Fold lower side and apply masala
Start rolling from down Make sure you roll tightly.
You need to tie with a white thread or with banana stem fibre. Deep fry,after half a minute flip and fry for another half a min.Ready to serve.
For tawa fry
  1. Cut the rolls into thin pieces.
  2. Heat a tawa, deep a roll piece in semolina(bombay rava).
  3. Add 2 tbsp ghee/oil.
  4. Close lid and fry for 10 min on low flame.
  5. Flip,add 2 tbsp ghee/oil.
  6. Again close lid and fry for 10 min on low flame. 
  7. Ready to serve
