Spicy Soupy Pundi Gashi ideal breakfast on a rainy day. Marvai pundi gasi is a mangalore tulunad's famous special cuisine. Marvai pundi gasi is prepared using clams with coconut and various spices. For all vegetarian out there here is a vegetarian version pundi gasi. This dish is ideal breakfast/meal in rainy season. Pundi gashi is time consuming but it's worth preparing.

Similar dish my grandma used to prepare dosa(bakri in konkani) and add it to curry.
So we realized this can also be done adding undi and that succeeded. We liked the taste very much. Especially I and my husband liked very much. In manglore this dish is named as marvai pundi gasi. In konkani we can say undi gashi(Smiles). Do try this dish. Enjoy...! Serves - 10 people. Preparation time - 1 hr 45 min (time consuming dish but it's worth preparing) Ingredients For pundi/undi:
Boiled rice - 2 cups. Dose or Cut sambar rice - 1 cup Coconut - 1/2 Water - 1 to 2 cups Oil - 1 tbsp Salt as per taste. For gashi(curry): Oil - 2 tsp Dry chillies - 2 long, 4 short Fenugreek seeds - 2 tsp Cumin seeds - 1 tsp Coriander seeds - 4 tsp Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp Onion - 1 Coconut - 1/2 Tamarind - 1 big lemon sized. Garlic - 4 cloves Salt - 1 tbsp Curry leaves - 2 sprig

    For preparing undi 
    1. Soak boiled rice and dosa rice(raw rice) together for 4 hrs. Instead dosa rice you can also use cut sambar rice.
    2. Wash rice and grind to coarse paste along with 1/2 coconut and salt as per taste. While grinding do not add more water.
    3. Heat a kadai,add 2 tsp oil.
    4. Add batter and start stirring on low flame until dough consistency.If required add little water.
    5. After sometime batter changes to dough consistency.
    6. Keep stirring till dough doesn't stick to your fingers.
    7. Now undi dough is ready.
    8. Dip your fingers in water and start doing small balls of dough.
    9. Once its ready lets steam them.
    10. While steaming make sure you put one layer only.Otherwise it will stick together.If you want to put more than one layer.first put one layer steam for 5 min and then put another layer and steam without whistles for 20 min.
    11. Undi is ready.
    For Preparing gashi
    1. Heat kadai,add oil 2 tsp,2 long chilly,4 short chilly.
    2. Fry for a min and remove once it turns crispy.
    3. Then to same kadai, add fenugreek seed 2 tsp,cumin seeds 1 tsp,coriander seeds 4 tsp.
    4. Fry on low flame till good aroma.Once spluttering starts add tumeric powder 1/2 tsp and Onion 1.
    5. Fry till translucent.
    6. Now lets grind masala. Add 1 lemon sized tamarind,1/2 coconut, fried chillies and fried step 15, grind to fine paste.
    7. Once masala is almost ready add 4 garlic.Remove after a min.
    8. Now boil the grinded masala. Add 1 tbsp salt,water as per your consistency,curry leaves 2 sprig.
    9. Bring it to boil.
    10. Now add steamed rice balls(undi).
    11. Boil for 5 min on medium flame.
    12. Now our pundi gashi is ready.
    13. Enjoy....!
