Soi Bhajjil Gashi

Soyi Bhajjile Gashi is a dish made with roasting coconut along with other spice. The vegetables used are breadfruit, potato, yam, drumstick and onion(optional).

Serves: 7-8 people

Ingredients

  • Vegetables required are as follows:

    1. Breadfruit - 1
    2. Potato - 1 cup
    3. Yam - 1 cup
    4. Onion - 2 (optional)
    5. Cashew - 1 fistful   
    6. Chickpea - ½ cup
    7. Salt - 2 tsp
  • For masala:
    1. Coconut - 1
    2. Coriander seeds - 1 tbsp
    3. Tamarind - 1 big lemon sized
    4. Dry red chilly - 30

For soaking
  1. 1 fistful cashew soak in hot water for 15min. 
  2. Soak ½ cup chickpea for 6-8 hrs.
For masala
  1. Add 20-30 red dry chilly to a kadai. Add 1 coconut. 1 tbsp coriander seeds. 1 big lemon sized tamarind. Roast them on low flame till brown.  Turn off the flame. Allow it to cool down.
  2. Fry 1 tbsp urid dal in oil till golden brown. Let it cool down.  
  3. First grind coconut and dry chilly to fine paste without adding water. While grinding it will leave oil. Then add urad dal and grind them roughly.  You should be able to feel the urid dal pieces.
  4. Masala is ready.
Vegetables/Lentils to cook:
  1. 1 chopped breadfruit, no need to peel skin if using matured breadfruit.
  2. 1 cup chopped potato.
  3. 1 cup chopped yam.
  4. 2 chopped onion(make big pieces). Here onion is optional.
  5. 4 jackfruit seeds. Peel and cut into half.
  6. 1 small drumstick chop them.
  7. Separate vegetables which will cook fast(breadfruit and drumstick).
  8. Cook chickpea in pressure cooker for 4 whistles. The stew of chickpea you can make saar or else you can add to this curry itself. We are preparing saar, seasoning with mustard seed and dry chilly.
  9. Add yam and cashew to cooked chickpea, pressure cook for 1-2 whistles.
  10. Cook the potato and jackfruit seed separately. Cook till 80% .
  11. After 5 min reduce flame and check if they have cooked.
  12. Once they have cooked, add onion, breadfruit and drumstick, chickpea, yam and cashew.
  13. Add 1-2 tsp rock salt. 
  14. Add water till all soak and cook till breadfruit softens. It will take 5-10 min.
  15. Now add masala and it's water mix well. Bring it to boil.
  16. For seasoning , I have 10-15 shallots finely chopped. 
  17. Add 1 tbsp oil. Fry till brown. Season the curry. (Here instead of onion you can also season with mustard seeds and curry leaves.)
  18. The flavor of curry is AWESOME. Hot yummy coconut dry curry is ready.
