Magge Koddel | Mangalore Cucumber Curry For Rice - Horse Gram Curry | Konkani Recipe

 

Koddel(Horse gram and Mangalore cucumber curry)
Koddel is a coconut based curry with garlic tempering. The legumes you can use to make koddel are

  • Alsande (Black eyed beans)
  • Rajma (Red kidney bean)
  • Kulithu (Horse gram)
  • Tingalavare (White navy bean)
  • Bagade (Chawli/Red lobia)

Serves - 4 people

Ingredients

  1. Mangalore cucumber chopped - 200 gram
  2. Horse gram - 80 gram
  3. Water as required to soak, cook and grind
  4. Grated coconut - ½
  5. Byadagi long red chilly - 3(less spice more color)
  6. Ramnad short red chilly - 2(spicy less color)
  7. Tamarind - small lemon size
  8. Crushed garlic pods - 10 to 15
  9. Garlic pods - 2 small(optional)
  10. Dosa rice - 1 tsp(optional)
  11. Oil - 2 to 3 tbsp
  12. Salt as per taste
  13. Jackfruit seed - 4 to 5

Method

  1. Soak horse gram for 3-4 hours. You can also soak for 6-7 hours.
  2. Chop Mangalore cucumber into half remove the seed part and chop them into cubes. Add them in a vessel salt as per taste and little water till it immerses. Close it with a lid.
  3. In a pressure, place the cooker stand. Add the soaked horse gram and pour water till it immerses. Place the step 2 on the stand. Pressure cook for 5 whistles on medium flame.
  4. For masala, fry the chilly with little oil till it puffs up. Keep it aside to cool down.
  5. Grind the fried chilly with grated coconut, tamarind, little water to smooth paste.
  6. Add 1 tsp dosa rice and 2 small garlic pods (both optional) and grind for 2 rounds.
  7. Once the cooker pressure releases, add in the cooked horse gram and mangalore cucumber in a cooking vessel. Add salt as per taste. Give it a good mix.
  8. Add the masala mix well and add salt if required. Give it a good boil.
  9. Give it a tempering, oil and crushed garlic. Fry the garlic till golden brown. 
  10. Serve hot with rice and curd for best combination.
