Simple and quick recipe, the taste enchances when tempered with mustard seed, curry leaves, dry red chilly, asafoetida powder.
Dalithoy is favorite dish for konkanis hence called as Kuldevu.
Dalithoy is also refered as DDT(Dhat Daali Thoy) meaning thick dalithoy.
With adding ginger and other without adding ginger.This recipe is without adding ginger.Both types has it's own taste.

Serves - 4
Preparation time - 30 min.
Ingredients
Toor dal | 3/4 cup |
Water | 2 cups |
Asafoetida paste | 1 big lemon sized(less strong) |
Green chilly | 2 |
Coriander leaves | 1 tbsp |
Salt | 2 tsp |
Oil | 2 tbsp |
Mustard seeds | 1 tsp |
Dry red chilly | 1(long), 4(short) |
Curry leaves | 1 sprig |
Asafoetida powder | 1/2 tsp |
Method
- Take one big lemon sized asafoetida and add water,dissolve asafoetida in water. Here I am using average quality asafoetida. So taking more quantity.
- In Pressure cooker add washed 3/4 cup toor dal and 2 cups water.
- Add 3 green chilly. Just make a cut. Don't slit completely.
- And pressure cook for 4-5 whistles.1 whistle on high flame and 4 whistles on medium flame.
- Once done open cooker and whisk well.
- Transfer in a cooking vessel and cook on medium flame.
- Add 2 tsp salt,asafoetida water, mix well.
- Add 1 tbsp coriander leaves.
- Bring it to boil and switch off flame.
- For tadka, add 2 tbsp oil.
- 1 tsp mustard seeds, let it splutter.
- 1 long dry chilly
- Add 4 short dry chilly(just tear a little,otherwise seeds will spill out)
- 1 sprig curry leaves.
- 1/2 tsp asafoetida powder. Mix well.
- Fry for 1/2 min so that chilly turn little brown.This way tadka turns aromatic and enchances taste.
- Daali thoy goes good with white rice and ghee.Daali thoy and valval is best combination. Do try this.
- Ready to serve............!. Serve along with 1 tsp ghee in rice.
